Start with the job. Then map the exams.

The SIE is a common foundation, not a license by itself. Your representative exam follows the work you will perform, and the employer-sponsored step begins only after a firm brings you into its registration process.

The three boundaries

Do not collapse these into one “license.”

Open/self-enrollable foundation State or role-specific layer

SIE: FINRA lists no co-requisite, and eligible individuals may enroll without being associated with a firm. Passing it alone does not create a FINRA registration or permission to conduct securities business.

Representative exam: FINRA says candidates must be associated with and sponsored by a member firm or other applicable SRO member to take representative-level qualification exams.

Registration layer: The firm maps actual job functions to registration categories. State-law exams or other qualifications may also apply. A job title alone cannot settle the answer.

Common route families

The examples above are deliberately incomplete. FINRA’s co-requisite table is the authoritative starting point; the firm and applicable regulators determine the exact route.

Use this before applying or enrolling

Four questions prevent most route mistakes.

  1. What activities will the job actually perform?
The same title can describe different regulated functions at different firms.
  2. Which registration category does the firm require?
    Use the employer’s compliance or registration team—not a job-board guess—as the authority.
  3. Which steps are open now?
The SIE can be an independent first step for an eligible candidate. Representative-level exams require the sponsorship boundary.
  4. What else applies?
State law, insurance, fingerprinting, background, continuing-education, or firm requirements can sit outside this simplified FINRA exam map.
